Geothermal in Multi-Residential Buildings

Geothermal heating and cooling provides all the same benefits to condominium unit or apartment complex owners as it does to house owners. The scale of a multi-unit system can even lead to better returns than those provided by smaller installations.
Some condominium owners with access to a suitable loop site have gone ahead on their own and installed systems no different to those in individual houses. All that may be required is the agreement of other unit owners for the drilling and trenching that will be necessary. The design and installation is no different to that for a stand-alone residence.
For multiple units it can be simpler and cheaper to pump the fluid from the loop field to each living unit around the building. Each unit then has its own small geothermal heat pump which uses the loop fluid to heat or cool the living unit as in a standard system. All the cost saving benefits of geothermal can then be enjoyed by all the occupants without losing any flexibility of heating or cooling. The scale of the system can result in significantly greater savings than can be expected in a single family home.
